Easy Homemade Applesauce Recipe Using Two Ingredients And With No-Added Sugar

Probably the easiest recipe you will ever make! Only two ingredients needed to make this recipe for natural homemade applesauce. Apples and water.

That’s right! Why take something with natural sweetness and add more sugar?

I’m not going to say that I don’t or won’t add sugar at some point but for this recipe to be all that I want it to be, there is no-added sugar.

Not everything tastes better with sugar on it. You won’t even be able to tell this all natural applesauce recipe is sugar free.

This is a perfect recipe for the kiddo’s because it won’t give them that “sugar high”.

All Natural?

Can you get any more natural than apples and water? Amazingly enough, that is all the ingredients in this recipe.

This is one of those recipes you should feel good about serving to your kiddo’s, loved ones or even yourself because this is not a processed dish.

Fruits that have been processed such as applesauce and fruit juices have had their fiber removed.

For that reason, this all natural applesauce recipe is a good choice in meal planning for diabetics since there is no-added or artificial sugars. It’s all natural!

Apples

The Almanac lists the best apples for making applesauce to include Cortland, Jonagold, Jonathan, McIntosh, Newton Pippin, and Winesap.

When I head to the grocery store most times I know what I am going there for. It’s a planned visit. But other times while I am shopping I see something that triggers my brain to say, “that sounds good. I will make that”. That happens way too many times. For example, I go in for milk and my bill is like $40! What! As I am unloading my shopping cart, yeah, a shopping cart for milk? Right! Anyway, as I am unloading my cart the cashier cheerfully asks, “Did you find everything ok?” Most times my response is “yes, thank you”. While deep down my inner self is saying, “Really? I just came in for milk. How can that be?”. It can’t just be me that that happens to. Does it?

The Point!

What I am getting at is while this brain of mine sees apples in the store and triggers, “applesauce sounds good”, with this spontaneous reaction I haven’t a clue what type of apples make the best applesauce. My mind just goes blank. So, I look for the sweetest type.

I don’t think it really matters how crisp the apples are since they are going to be mashed up anyway.

For this recipe I purchased Red Delicious Apples and it turned out wonderful!

Applesauce Recipe

Thoroughly Clean Fruit

Even though the skin is removed for making applesauce I highly recommend cleaning the apples with this all natural wash to safely remove wax and any agricultural chemicals prior to cutting and slicing.

This recipe can make as much or as little as you want. To make about 2 cups of applesauce I find using five apples does the job. Why five? I want my applesauce to be fresh and I just don’t like to make a ton of it.

Preparing Apples

Now that the apples are cleaned then it’s time to cut and remove skins or remove skin and then cut. Whichever you prefer. As for me, I like to cut my apples with this apple slicer corer first then remove the skins.

So, I have the apple cut and cored and while removing the skins I then place the apples in a pot of water (so they don’t start turning brown).

All done? Drain the water from the apples. Place in a pan with just enough water to barely cover the apples. Bring to a boil and then simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until desired tenderness.

Once apples have reached the desired tenderness remove from heat. Using a potato masher mash apples to desired consistency. If preferred, place in a food processor or blender for a smooth applesauce.

That’s all there is to it! Let apples cool prior to eating. Store in a closed container in the refrigerator and Enjoy!

Optional: To spice things up add a bit of cinnamon. If you must, you can add sweetener of choice.
